NHSPA SUMMER WORKSHOP

The workshop will take place from Monday morning through Wednesday afternoon, and students will not only get a chance to get to know other student journalists from across the state, but they also will be educated by the highest quality professionals that the journalism education world has to offer.  Each of the following camp speakers are multi-year camp veterans.

Editorial Leadership:  

  • Scott Winter, instructor from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn.   
    • An incredibly charismatic speaker helps all with leadership potential on staffs building communities and create ownership of publications at the student-level.

Yearbook Production

  • Laurie Hansen, Stillwater High School, Minn.
  • Liz Keeling, Champlin Park High School, Minn.
    • These two ladies win awards on the national level in yearbook.  They work seamlessly together to help teams create theme packages so staffs can hit the ground running when school starts.  They give individual feedback, and have Additionally, they will have time to work on a yearbook cover with a cover artist provided by Walsworth.

Newspaper Design

  • Jim Streisel, Carmel High School, Ind.
    • Dow Jones News Fund National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year for 2013.  He and his staffs consistently earn the nation’s top awards.  Even the newest staff members can walk in on the first day of school with confidence and enthusiasm because of him.  Students of all levels will leave camp with quality work in their hands.

Digital Photography

  • Bruce Thorson, University of Nebraska, Lincoln Photography Professor
  • Brian Lehman, Freelance photographer for UNL, National Geographic photographer
    • Students will do photo shoots of community events/activities and learn about composition of photographs and how to better their camera-using skills.

Journalistic Writing

  • Duane Roberson,Yearbook Production
    • Students gain journalistic writing skills by practicing interviewing, ways to write stories, and even work together with other tracks at camp.

Video Production

  • Taylor Siebert, of StrivTV
    • Brings aspects of video in journalism to the forefront.  Shows kids how to dive into how video changes the way we communicate as a society.  With tools such as iMovie, Vine, Instagram Video, and live-streaming, everyone is surrounded by video.  Students will be hands-on with all these tools.
